Hello, and welcome to my new webpage. My name is Rod Williams and I’m the author of two novels and a collection of short stories. My second book of short stories, Where’s Your Darkness?, will be published within the next several months. I’m excited about that, and would like to say a few words by way of introducing the new collection.
First, the eleven stories are all stand-alone tales, meaning they are not connected by theme, or with recurring characters. Secondly, although I hope I have my own distinctive “voice” as a writer, the subjects of my stories are varied or (as one friend describes them) “all over the place.” Thirdly, I tend to write about “ordinary” people in unusual and challenging circumstances. I’m fascinated by how we humans manage (and sometimes mismanage) to navigate this hard life of ours, and I try to capture some of that struggle in words.
Because I’m drawn to lists and titles myself, here’s a preview of my Table of Contents for Where’s Your Darkness?:
Gunny’s Folly
Twelve Toes and a Dozen Roses
It Takes Forever to Get Out of Eugene
Catherine
House Without Music
The Thirty-First Code Talker
Death of an Americana Singer
Mercy Road
Where’s Your Darkness?
Her Second Husband’s Funeral
Welcome to Emerald Hollow
I know you can’t tell much about a story from its title, but this list is meant as kind of a “coming attraction.” My plan is to summarize each story in future posts on this site, so stay tuned.
In the meantime, thanks for checking in. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments via Facebook and/or gmail. I look forward to hearing from old friends, and also anticipate making a few new ones in the coming months. Best to you all.
Peace,
Rod
Rod Williams has published two novels, an anthology of short stories, and a smattering of poetry, essays, and music reviews over the past thirty-five years. A new short story collection, Where’s Your Darkness?, will be published in late 2024. He was born in New York and has also lived in Colorado, Florida, California and Arizona. He currently resides in Eugene, Oregon with his partner Jessica.
A young man with a mysterious and dangerous power. A new theory on where evolution is taking the human race. A widower’s broken heart and his search for an aging actress who may help heal it. Giant ants taking over the world.
Take a late life journey with a man called John, who decides to quit his job, dust off his old guitar, and take to the road as a modern-day, Woody Guthrie-like troubadour. It’s the “Year of the Darkening,” the crash of 2008, “The Great Goddamn.” In his travels, John meets a variety of “ordinary” Americans just trying to survive and find their way throughout those hard times.
Rachel Demeter has died, and her death brings together her three very different sons and the one enigmatic woman who has loved them all. As they gather, old family tensions, rivalries, and grievances resurface…and family secrets come to light.
Rod Williams’ book reminds me of the great classic On The Road.I enjoyed traveling across the country with Johnny, the people he met, and the songs he wrote. Anyone interested in the life of a troubadour will immensely enjoy this well-written novel. – Joe DiBudeo
Troubadour John struck many chords for me! I realized (he) carried on the tradition of the Guthries, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul, and Mary, Burl Ives, Johnny Cash, and John Denver to list only a few. May Americana Singerherald a new generation of musical protestations against all injustice, while looking to a future with a hope and idealism expressed in Rod’s last pages. An excellent job, well-written and provocative. – Theodore Durst
His book is filled with a powerful magnetism, palpable from the first few sentences of the prologue until the final words at the end of the book. I enjoyed the poetry-infused prose, the generous peppering of humor throughout, and the songs that the main character John used to soothe his soul.--Margaret Priddy
This would make a great book for book club discussions. The characters are deep and wounded- one dysfunctional family. And yet, I think most will identify with their struggles to make sense of incredible discoveries that come to light in the short time the siblings are together. The various characters still “call” to me, weeks after reading the book. I highly recommend! Lulu Muffat
This book is an excellent choice if you are looking for an enjoyable read with interesting characters, insights into human nature, plus some surprising twists to the plot.
